NEPI – License Management
Introduction
This tutorial covers upgrading the NEPI software installed on an edge-compute device from a free DEMO version to either an Educational and Commercial license version.
What you will need
1) 1x NEPI-enabled device and power supply.
2) 1x PC with internet access and configured to access the NEPI device’s RUI browser-based interface and NEPI shared network drives.
Check Your Current License Type
On startup, NEPI looks in the nepi_storage shared shared network drive’s under nepi_storage/license folder. Commercial license files are unique for each device based on a device’s hardware identifier. If no license file is present or an invalid license file is detected, NEPI defaults to a DEMO configuration and show the following message at the top of all RUI pages.

You can check the License type of a NEPI installation on the SYSTEM/Device_Manager RUI tab under the “NEPI LICENSE” section as shown below. If a valid license file is not found, the license type will be listed as “Unlicensed”

Getting a NEPI License
- Copy the device’s hardware key shown in the “H/W Key” box.

- If you are requesting a free NEPI License under a supported partnership program, enter the copied hardware key value on any request forms where a NEPI Hardware Key is required. Learn more about NEPI Partner Programs under the PROGRAMS menu at: https://nepi.com/
- If you would like to purchase a NEPI license, enter the copied hardware key value on any quote or purchase forms where a NEPI Hardware Key is required. Learn more about purchasing NEPI Software licenses at:
https://numurus.com/software-nepi-engine/
- Once your NEPI License requests is processed, you will receive two license files by email, an encrypted “.gpg” key file and a license information “.txt” file that look like:
nepi_license_3c6d66a3e09f.gpg
nepi_license_3c6d66a3e09f.txt
Installing a NEPI License
- Add your NEPI License files to the “license” folder on your NEPI device’s “nepi_storage” drive.

The NEPI software will automatically discover and check the files for a valid key against the hardware key for the NEPI device they are installed on. If a valid license file is found, NEPI will remove the RUI “UNLICENSED – DEMO ONLY” menu message and update the license type in the SYSTEM/Device_Manager RUI Tab.
